Market and Industry Landscape: Beyond Traditional Ad Slots

Programmatic buying continues to account for roughly 90% of global display ad spend, a figure that has held consistently across independent 2025–2026 estimates [1]. The shift from static ad slots toward orchestrated, real-time systems is real and ongoing, consistent with the broader “screens to systems” thesis running through this report series.

From impressions to attention. Market leaders are genuinely moving toward attention-based measurement, formalized industry-wide by the IAB and Media Rating Council’s joint Attention Measurement Guidelines, finalized in November 2025 [2]. Those guidelines treat attention as a complementary signal to viewability and clicks, not a wholesale replacement for them, which is a more defensible framing than treating “cognitive recall” as an already-solved metric.

The rise of RT3D environments. As CTV and gaming environments converge, IAB Tech Lab has been actively standardizing non-interruptive, in-scene formats — its updated CTV ad format guidelines, published for public comment in December 2025, closed that comment period on January 31, 2026 and are now moving into working-group revision [3].

Agentic buying. AI agents adjusting bids and creative variations in real time, within guardrails, is no longer a forward-looking claim. IAB Tech Lab released a roadmap in January 2026 extending OpenRTB specifically to support autonomous, agent-driven campaign execution, including its own Agentic Ad Management Protocol [4].

Technical Architecture: From SDK/API to MCP-Native

Integrating ad-tech into a game engine requires a stack that manages attention and engagement signal without disrupting engine performance, and the recommended architecture for that stack has changed since this report was first drafted.

The original version recommended standardized SDKs and APIs for Unity and Unreal, with a centralized SaaS control plane for cross-format distribution. That model is being replaced with an MCP-based PaaS/IaaS approach across this series, and real vendors are already moving the same direction: Meta has shipped MCP-based developer tools for its advertising workflows, and Equativ — an independent, major ad-tech platform — now offers its own MCP server as part of its agentic product suite [5][6]. Treating a 3D scene’s ad-capable “spatial nodes” as MCP-discoverable tools that an agent can call directly, rather than as fixed API endpoints a developer integrates once per engine, follows that same direction and scales better across Unity, Unreal, and whatever engine comes after them.

Real-time state management. Resolving an ad trigger fast enough to avoid frame-rate drops or visible “jank” remains a genuinely hard systems problem. The original report’s “<100ms” target should be treated as a design goal to validate against measured, in-engine latency, not stated as an already-achieved figure, since no benchmark was cited to support it.

Deterministic rendering. Ads still need to respect a scene’s lighting and physics to avoid breaking immersion, and this is a rendering and engine-integration problem independent of which orchestration protocol sits above it.

Participation Models and Ecosystem Dynamics

Curated marketplaces. Supply path optimization, creating direct and transparent relationships between 3D content creators and advertisers, remains the primary tool for eliminating redundant intermediaries.

Industry standardization. Participation should be framed around IAB Tech Lab’s OpenRTB extensions for agentic execution specifically, alongside its evolving CTV and in-scene ad format standards, rather than treating any single 2025 draft as a finalized, permanent standard [3][4].

User-centric engagement. Matching the challenge of an interactive ad to a user’s skill level is consistent with the general, well-established psychological concept of flow state. This report does not attach a specific memory-retention percentage to that concept, since no verifiable source for a precise figure in this context was located.

Talent Hub Positioning and Culture Communication

Attracting strong engineers in 2026 still requires moving past “selling ads” toward a genuine technical mission.

Engineering culture. Rust, Go, and microservices remain reasonable implementation-level signals of technical seriousness, but the more differentiating signal now is whether the platform treats AI agents as first-class consumers of its tools — an MCP-native design — rather than only supporting people integrating through a dashboard or SDK.

Career trajectories. Skill-first growth remains effective, with early-career rotations in real-time rendering, MCP tool design, and agent orchestration specifically.

Authentic transparency. Engineering deep-dives — real breakdowns of how a specific latency spike was diagnosed and fixed in a gaming or urban environment — continue to do more for recruiting than general culture marketing.

Strategic Recommendations for Website Development

●      Bifurcated user journey: Maintain a two-track homepage entry point — “Solutions for Brands” (ROI and attention-focused) and “Systems for Developers” (MCP documentation-focused).

●      Interactive tech visualization: Show data flowing from the engine’s MCP layer through the orchestration engine to the final render, replacing the earlier SDK-to-logic-engine diagram.

●      “Speed to code” access: Keep MCP tool schemas and documentation accessible within one click of the header.

●      Cultural social proof: Continue using employee-generated technical content over generic culture marketing.

●      Outcome-driven messaging: The original version of this report closed with “Build the Operating System for the Modern City” — a hook that belongs to a companion report on urban kiosks, not this one. For RT3D and spatial computing specifically, a more accurate version is: “Build the operating system for interactive worlds.”
